Orion Energy is an electricity and gas utility. It has a 2-year MSA with Northwind, with one important constraint: its data must stay in the United States.

Engagement summary

Northwind is working with Orion on a meter and grid data platform: collecting readings, storing them and providing analytics for Orion's planning teams. The platform is hosted in US regions only. Maya Torres leads delivery, supported by Isha Patel on architecture and engineers from Austin. Pune and London engineers may work on the account only if the delivery manager confirms that no Orion data leaves the US; see below.

What "data must stay in the US" means in practice

  1. Host Orion data and backups only in US regions. Backups follow SOP-IT-002 (daily backups, kept 35 days), and the backup location must also be in the US.
  2. Do not copy Orion data to laptops or to systems outside the US. See Coding standards.
  3. Staff outside the US must not access the data; ask the delivery manager before assigning them. Remote staff use the US VPN profile, see Connect to the VPN.
  4. Subcontractors and suppliers must also respect the restriction, see Raise a purchase request.
  5. Staff working remotely should stay within the US while handling Orion data; see Leave and remote work.
